알베르티는 건축을 라인먼트(Lineaments)와 구조(Structure)로 나누었다.
라인먼트는 선, 각, 비례 같은 설계 개념을 뜻하며, 구조는 실제 재료와 시공을 말한다.

아름다움과 장식

알베르티에게 건축의 본질은 아름다움이었다. 아름다움은 건축 전체에 스며든 속성이고, 장식(ornament)은 그 아름다움을 더 두드러지게 하는 장치였다.
그는 “우리는 신들의 건축에서 효용이 아니라 아름다움에 감탄한다”고 말하며, 심지어 아름다움이 적의 마음까지도 누그러뜨릴 수 있다고 했다.

For Alberti, the essence of architecture was beauty. Ornament simply highlighted that beauty.
He wrote: “When we look at the works of the gods, we admire not their utility, but their beauty.” Alberti even claimed that beauty could soften the anger of enemies.
