Bacon’s Castle (1655)

In Virginia, many settlers expected to return to England. So houses didn’t need to last long.

In New England, Puritan families moved together and built villages.

• Houses used post-and-beam framing, with mortise-and-tenon joints instead of nails — strong enough to last centuries.
• Frozen ground required solid foundations, which made houses even more durable.
